Southern Miyazaki

Udo Shrine

Udo Shrine is a beautiful Shinto shrine located in Nichinan, Miyazaki Prefecture, built inside a seaside cave along the cliffs of the Pacific Ocean.
It is dedicated to Ugayafukiaezu no Mikoto, the father of Emperor Jimmu, Japan’s legendary first emperor.

The shrine also honors sea deities

(known as Kaijin, or "sea gods").

It is believed that the gods of the ocean protect travelers and fishermen.

You can feel this spiritual connection as you stand by the ocean-facing cave — a place where the gods of the sea are believed to listen to prayers.
